Dental Prostheses

Prosthetics, in the context of dentistry, refer to artificial replacements for various aesthetic irregularities or lost teeth in the mouth. They are designed to fulfill individuals’ aesthetic and functional needs and are commonly known as “dentures.” Dental prosthetics often become necessary due to factors such as tooth loss, untreated gum diseases, or accidents that result in missing teeth. Therefore, when teeth are lost, it is essential to create prosthetic devices that can function and appear as healthy teeth do, both functionally and aesthetically.

Types of Prosthetics

  1. Fixed Prosthetics:
    • Crown and bridge-like bonded prosthetics.
    • Single crowns: Covering a single tooth.
    • Bridges: Covering missing teeth along with adjacent teeth (commonly applied).
  2. Implant-Supported Prosthetics:
    • Prosthetics attached to screws implanted in the jawbone.
  3. Removable Prosthetics:
    • Total or partial dentures.
    • Total dentures: Used in completely edentulous mouths, often in older individuals.
    • Partial dentures: Applied to partially edentulous mouths, utilizing clasps or attachments to remaining teeth.
    • Precision attachment dentures: Partial dentures without visible clasps, utilizing precision attachments.
  4. Implant-Supported Prosthetics:
    • Fixed or removable prosthetics.
    • Fixed: Porcelain crowns applied to one or more implants.
    • Removable: Dentures resembling total prosthetics applied to completely edentulous mouths.
