Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots typically made of titanium or titanium compounds, used to replace missing teeth in the mouth.

Titanium is preferred for implants because it does not interact with body tissues and is resistant to forces. Implants can be placed into the tooth socket immediately after extraction, provided there is no serious infection.

In cases where there is sufficient and suitable bone, implants can also be placed into the jawbone with a simple operation to create fixed or removable prostheses. If the quantity and density of the bone are not at the desired level, pre-implant bone augmentation procedures may be necessary before the implant application.

What Happens During the Initial Examination?

The purpose of the initial examination is to determine whether the area with missing teeth is suitable for implant placement. After obtaining detailed information about your systemic health, an intraoral examination is performed. Panoramic radiography or three-dimensional imaging (tomography) is taken from the relevant areas to make a model and decide on the suitability for implant placement and the type of implant to be used.

How is the Implant Procedure Performed and What Processes Does it Involve?

The implant application is a very simple and painless procedure. First, the area is numbed with local anesthesia, a socket is prepared in the bone where the implant will be placed, and the implant is inserted. After the implant is placed, screws that will remain on the implant during the healing period are installed, and the healing period is awaited. For dental implants to remain healthy against the pressures generated during chewing, they need to fuse completely with the jawbone. This period varies depending on the type and location of the operation, the age and health condition of the patient. After the operation, a period of at least 1 to 3 months is required for the production of permanent prostheses. In cases of insufficient bone, the waiting time for implants placed in areas where new bone has been created may be slightly longer. Then, measurements are taken, and the planned prosthesis is fabricated.

How Long Does the Surgical Procedure Take?

The duration of the implant application varies depending on the number of implants to be applied and whether additional procedures to enhance bone quality will be performed in the area of application.

Can Implants be Placed in the Same Session as Tooth Extraction?

Placing an implant immediately after extracting a tooth is called “immediate implant application.” It is a technique that can be preferred when suitable conditions are met. The biggest risk in this procedure is the presence of infected tissues in the tooth extraction socket.

What Method is Applied if There is Insufficient Bone in the Area for Implant Placement?

The density, height, and thickness of the bone in the area where the implant will be placed are important and directly affect the success of the implant. In cases where the bone is insufficient, various techniques (using bone grafts) are required to create bone. For this process, procedures such as sinus lift in the upper posterior region, block grafting, and horizontal and vertical bone formation in the lower jaw can be performed.
